По ходу работы над полурекламным текстом про DLP-проекторы знаменитой конторы Texas Instruments я наткнулся на очень симпатичный ресурс. Словарик этот мне очень пригодился, потому что текст был только наполовину рекламным. Вторая половина состояла из вполне конкретных терминов, о существовании многих из которых до вчерашнего дня я даже не догадывался. Рекомендую всем коллегам, кто работает с научно-техническими текстами этого профиля – HI-FI, бытовая электроника и т.п. А кто сейчас этим не занимается?

А куда, интересно, деваться переводчикам, на что они теперь будут содержать семьи, любовниц (-ков), кушать хамон с пармезанчиком, ездить в Турцию или, прости господи, Сочи, наконец?
Со мной-то ясно, у меня одно из двух на всю Флориду свидетельств Американской ассоциации переводчиков (American Translators Association – ATA) по переводу на русский, определенная известность и неплохая репутация; печать нотариуса, который во Флориде даже бракосочетание граждан может осуществлять – короче с голоду не помру, а вот как другие теперь будут жить? Вообще, я не очень люблю русских переводчиков, но даже мне их становится жалко.
P.S. Many public and private agencies in the US require an ATA-certifed translator’s affidavit of translation accuracy.
Необходимым требованием к переводу документов с иностранных языков на английский у большинства государственных и многих частных учреждений США служит наличие у переводчика Свидетельства об аттестации Американской ассоциацией переводчиков старого или нового образца.

Today, I have added a “Certified Scuba Diver” to my previous “Certified Russian” title. During today’s two dives I used my new diving computer. It’s like a fancy wrist watch with a zillion features. One of them is to warn the owner that due to the time he/she spent deep in the water, he should NOT fly for the next 18 hours. It’s about nitrogen in the blood, decompression, etc. Serious shit. Luckily, I don’t have to fly anywhere – I now live in one of the best places for scuba diving!
It’s certainly not the hardest sport, but will sure keep me in good shape. I was really exhausted when I dragged myself and my gear home tonight. But before relaxing you have to do one more chore – rinse everything in fresh water. I love it. This is exactly what I needed – some physical excercise which you simply cannot ignore. You must do it, no matter how tired you are. My doctor will be very happy with my new hobby.
There was one nagging problem though. My instructor wants me to bring a paper photo, passport size, to attach to his application regarding my PADI certification. The last time I needed such photos was 8 years ago, when I applied for the travel passport. Wasting time and money on ‘official’ passport photo services wasn’t in my plans. So, here comes good old Photoshop, and Costco 1-Hour Photo. I happened to have one recent shot in my iPhoto, which looked very passport like. Several moves by Erazor tool and Clone Stamp tool, plus adjusting Levels and a little cropping fixed my problem in five minutes. Man, do I love my toys and progress in general!
Tomorrow I can pick the print up at my favorite Costco – 5 minutes drive from home. Total cost: $0.14

У меня спросили фамилию, убедились, что я действительно забронировал встречу с “гением” и сказали подождать минут десять. Через пятнадцать минут я шагал к своему джипу кратчайшим маршрутом через парфюмерный отдел магазина Macy’s, чувствуя себя идиотом, но с “исправленным” макбуком.
I installed Pandora on my iPad on advice of a friend. I also coupled iPad with Samsung Chrystal Surround AirTrack using Bluetooth. I now wonder what to do with thousands of songs in my iTunes? Pandora plays all of them (for free) after I entered the names of my most favorite bands as Pandora radio stations. What’s most impressive, like Apple iTunes Genius, the program very cleverly and comprehensively (unlike any human) collects other samples of the same type and genre. You wonder how does it know it my favorite? Or you think “Wow, how come I didn’t hear it before?”
Before that, I had similar questions listening to another iPad app – TuneIn Radio, which allows you to listen to 50 thousand radio stations across the world…
How many other dear things and values will lose their … value thanks to technological progress. I already got rid of several shoeboxes of photographs (my whole life). Scanned into iPhoto library they took a meager 6gb. Before that, I put all my dictionaries (100+) in the garage and forgot about them. Now I don’t need any CDs, DVDs, etc. What next? Pandora box indeed…
Only OS X users (Mac addicts) will understand why May 13 is my new official holiday!
